# Question 1

What experiences do you or your family members have of cycling for either transport or leisure? Bearing in mind that e-bikes can now make County Durham's hills easy, what would you consider to be the main barriers which prevent more people from cycling in your area, and how would you tackle these?

Michael GOULDING
(Independent)

I've had a bike for years, which I use solely for leisure/exercise, although not as frequently now as I used to - due mainly to time constraints and focusing on other forms of exercise (football, gym, swimming). My wife intends to buy an e-bike sometime soon. We both agree that it's a great way to get out and about when we have the time. My son has an expensive off-road bike on which he does long (20 miles plus) exercise/training runs. We are fortunate that the C2C cycle track runs through our ward, giving access to safe cycling. I consider the danger to cyclists on the roads from other vehicular road users to be the biggest barrier to more usage. Better and more commonplace cycle lanes could change this, where space allows.

# Question 2

Schools in County Durham have bike shelters but they are often empty. Children who might like to cycle are often driven to school because parents don't consider our streets safe enough for children to walk or cycle. What are your views about cycling as a travel option for children? What practical changes would you like to see in your area to enable children to cycle?

Michael GOULDING
(Independent)

I agree that it is especially dangerous for younger children to cycle on the roads. The location of schools, in relation to where you live, is a major factor which can't be ignored. I have also seen first hand lots of poor and unsafe behaviour by parents in cars next to schools - speeding and parking carelessly. As well as the physical changes required (cycle lanes and road crossings), changing the mindset of people generally, to encourage safer use of cycles, would be a tall order.

# Question 3

The surge in cycling during the Covid 19 lockdowns showed how quieter and safer conditions encourage people to cycle. Cycling can help address many issues:

* the climate emergency, if people cycle instead of making shorter journeys by car
* social inclusion, because cycling is affordable and enables those on low incomes to access employment and other opportunities
* the health crisis, as exercise incorporated into journeys is very effective

How big a role do you think cycling can play in tackling these urgent issues? How can Durham County Council increase investment in cycling and quickly deliver safe, complete cycle routes to key destinations?

Michael GOULDING
(Independent)

Cycling for leisure and exercise is one thing I am fully in favour of. But the modern world means that many people have to travel long distances to their place of employment. Whether it can be realistically done by bike is dependent on many factors - distance, time, danger etc, but also the facilities available at the place of work - do they have secure spaces for bikes, do they have showers so you can clean up after your journey etc. There's no easy, single solution for any of it.

# Question 4

Over the last year a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) has been prepared for Chester-le-Street by consultants working for the County Council. This will set out the improvements that are needed to enable people to walk and cycle their journeys around the town. Will you commit to working to get a good proportion of this plan implemented during your term of office?

Michael GOULDING
(Independent)

Absolutely I would, if the plan is feasible and there is funding for it to be implemented. I have to admit I know nothing about this.

# Question 5

Park Road North is used by many cyclists wanting to access North Road and the C2C route from the A167 Great North Cycle Route (GNC). Park Road North has cycle lanes on both carriageways but these frequently have cars parked in them forcing cyclists out into the road. What would be your vision for making this area safer for people cycling?

Michael GOULDING
(Independent)

I would be in favour of making it a traffic offence to block cycle lanes. Momentary parking for deliveries is acceptable, but longer than that is unnecessary. There's a lot of off-road parking available on Park Road North for householders - but I know that it is sometimes used by visitors to the riverside park, to avoid parking charges. I have stated in my election leaflets that I am in favour of free parking through Chester-le-Street, which would make this unnecessary.
